CHAPTER 14

A young woman in a spangled peach dress came careering up the stairs and nearly hurtled into Julien and Kitty. Julien put a steadying hand on her gloved arm. "Are you all right, miss?"

"Oh, I'm so sorry."

Julien released the young woman, assured she was secure on her feet. She had nut-brown hair slipping from its pins, and clear brown eyes. "It's difficult in such a crowd. May my wife and I help you find your way back to your family?"

"Oh, no, I'm not—That is, I can manage on my own."

Julien smiled. For a hardened agent, he had always, Kitty thought, had surprisingly kind smiles. "You appeared intent on getting somewhere. May we help you find someone?"

The girl drew a quick breath.

"My apologies," Julien said. "There is no one here to introduce us. My name is Julien. Julien Mallinson, if I must add more."

Her eyes widened. "You're Lord Carfax."

"Unfortunately. My wife Kitty."

"I'm Justine. Justine Lambton."

"Are you looking for someone, Miss Lambton?" Kitty asked.

"No. Yes. But—Do you know Gerry—Gerald Schofield?"

"Gerry Schofield?" Harry materialized out of the crowd beside them.

"Miss Lambton," Julien said by way of introduction. "Harry Davenport."

Justine Lambton's eyes lit up. "The classicist? You wrote The Many Faces of Livia?"

Genuine surprise crossed Harry's face. For someone so brilliant, he was, Kitty thought, distinctly unassuming about his work. "I am. You follow classical studies?"

"Oh yes. I always have. My father tutors classics."

"So you've grown up in the world of classical studies."

"Sort of. Mostly seeing undergraduates come for tutoring sessions and my father shake his head."

"And I imagine you know a great deal more than most of those undergraduates yourself."

"Well, yes. That is, often. Quite disagreeable. I should love to go a meeting of the Classicists' Society."

"There's no reason you shouldn't. But—forgive me, you said you were looking for Gerry Schofield? Would your given name happen to be Justine?"

"How can you—I've heard you were an intelligence agent, but—"

"It's less any sort of investigative ability than the fact that I happen to have just been speaking with Mr. Schofield," Harry said. "He mentioned you. Or at least he mentioned a quite brilliant scholar named Justine, whose father is a Cambridge tutor."

Justine flushed, then started. "Gerry's here? Thank goodness. You've seen him?"

"I was just speaking with him. And it sounds as though you need to see him as soon as possible?"

"Yes, please!"
